What is defusion meaning?

Defusion is a key concept in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and refers to a process of distancing oneself from unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and emotions in order to gain perspective and reduce their impact. It involves recognizing that thoughts and feelings are not necessarily reliable indicators of reality and that they can be challenged or changed through mindfulness and other techniques. Defusion techniques can include mindfulness practices, visualization exercises, and cognitive restructuring. The goal of defusion is to create more flexibility in thought patterns and to help individuals develop a greater capacity to tolerate difficult or uncomfortable emotions without getting caught up in them.
